Urging All Men to Take Care of Their Health in Honor of Men’s Health Week!

While most men in the United States look forward to Father’s Day during the month of June, either to celebrate with their kids or to honor their own dads, there is another important event held this month. The week leading up to Father’s Day is known as Men’s Health Week, and this year, it is celebrated from June 15-21st. This is a time to urge all men, whether they are young or old, to stop and reflect on their own health. Throughout the week, awareness is raised about preventable diseases, and men are urged to make a doctor’s appointment in order to get a check-up and tests to make sure they are not facing any medical problems.

According to MensHealthWeek.org, this week is not just about men, but about families as a whole, as it is often wives or children who urge the men in their families to take care of their health. The website quotes Congressman Bill Richardson, who in 1994, stated: “Recognizing and preventing men’s health problems is not just a man’s issue. Because of its impact on wives, mothers, daughters, and sisters, men’s health is truly a family issue.” Natural Healing Tools joins the Congressman and all supporters of Men’s Health Week to urge all men and boys to take care of their health by getting medically screened in June, and reminds them to take care of themselves all year long with these tips for men’s health.

Men’s Health Tips
  1. Nutrition – We are what we eat; and while women usually diet to lose weight and look skinnier, most men, while wanting to look thin, also want to promote their strength and build muscles. Therefore, they should not just focus on eating fruit and vegetables, but should have their own diet. Men require more nutrients than women because of their larger size and weight. For breakfast, protein is recommended, especially for those that work out in the morning, as it helps to promote muscle retention. A great breakfast option is eggs with a side of lean ham. For lunch, more protein as well as whole grain carbs are required to garner energy to get through the rest of the day. A chicken sandwich on whole grain bread is a killer lunch choice. Healthy essential fats help your body grow and repair, so, for dinner, choose salmon and avocado.
  2. Stress – Men don’t always know how to deal with stress effectively, which can lead to chronic anxiety and other, major health problems. While women tend to turn to others during stressful times, men often prefer to bottle up and not deal with anything negative. Stress can lead to serious health concerns such as high blood pressure, depression, gastrointestinal problems and heart attacks. This is why it is imperative for men to deal with their stress; great strategies are learning breathing exercises, exercising and/or talking to a therapist. It is important for families to be involved in the lives of the men in their families, helping them to relax and unwind after stressful times at work to promote their health and long lives.
  3. Exercise – With long hours at work combined with personal responsibilities, men complain about not having enough time to play their favorite sports or hit the gym. However, this is a big obstacle to their health, as exercising is not just good for the body, but also for the mind. First, it helps fight obesity and allows men to manage their weight, whether to bulk up through strength training, or to lose weight through cardio. Second, exercise has numerous health advantages, such as lowering cholesterol and blood pressure, fighting heart disease, lowering the risk of diabetes, and preventing colon cancer. Furthermore, because of the endorphins that are released during a sweat session, exercise fights depression and usually improves the mood, so men are happier when they come home.
For the men that want to celebrate Father’s Day with their families for years and years to come, it is important to honor Men’s Health Week by preventing any possible health concerns and seeing a doctor annually. Additionally, it is vital to focus on health every day by eating a balanced diet, controlling stress levels and exercising.

Natural Healing Tools wishes all fathers a Happy (and healthy) Father's Day.
